Glades County was named for the Florida Everglades and was created in 1921. Glades County is 986 square miles, where 774 square miles is land and 213 square miles is water. It is located on the western bank of Lake Okechobee which adds to the quality of life because of the cattle, fishing, sugar cane, produce and citrus industries in this area. Moore Haven is the county seat of Glades County. It is located on the banks of the Caloosahatchee River and of Lake Okechobee. These water sources are valuable to the County not only because they provide a variety of recreational activities, but also because Lake Okechobee is the largest fresh water lake in Florida and the Caloosahatchee River is part of Florida's Intracoastal Waterway. In northeast Glades County is the Brighton Seminole Indian Reservation. Some unincorporated communities are Buckhead Ridge, Lakeport, Ortona, Palmdale, and Muse.
