Franklin County is a coastal county located in the panhandle. Its estimated population was 10,177 as of 2005. Its county seat is Apalachicola, but it also includes Carrabelle. The total area of Franklin County is 544 square miles, of which 47.53% is water. The extreme tip of Franklin County is bordered by the Ochlockonee River. The county was created in 1832 and was named for Benjamin Franklin, famous scientist, printer, and author.
